An interactive retail configurator tool for designing composite doors, with a trade only system with straight through processing to automate manufacturing.

Now in its third iteration, this configurator generates 8 figures sales annually and is a critical tool both for marketing and as an order fulfilment application in store at all Eurocell branches nationwide.

Now approaching its 15th year and a 9 figure ROI, "Design Your Door" is on its 3rd iteration.

Originally built in (for those old enough to remember) Macromedia Flash, this interactive door design tool we built for Eurocell is now in its 3rd iteration and due to go live in Q3 2023.

Eurocell saw an opportunity to build a lead generation tool that allowed retail customers to design and configure a composite door and send on a sales enquiry. Shortly after, a field sales app was built for iPad, and finally, an executable application for Windows was built utilising straight-through process automation. The application takes full technical specifications in branches via trained operatives; the app then sends completed orders directly to automated manufacturing.

<p>Eurocell continues to build on the success of the original project with us. This third iteration includes a larger inventory and more options than have ever been available via this self-serve tool.</p>

Overview of the solution.

One of our longer-running projects, the tool has moved from Flash to HTML/CSS and now to modernised code in readiness for its next few years of life.

Scope:

  • Journey mapping and UX research to ensure as far as possible a friction-free customer experience for what is an unusual, often one-off task.

  • Design and creative for the general user interface with simplicity and wayfinding at the heart of the GUI. This is a massive revenue generator, and as such, ease of use and process completion is vital to ongoing returns.

  • Prototyping (low and high fidelity). Prototypes are built first for sanity checks and secondly to provide a robust visual representation of the key user journeys before coding, in line with our fast-fail methodology.

  • Custom content management system. The CMS is custom to remove any "noise" and unnecessary functions, ensuring that training, onboarding and day-to-day use is simple.

  • Custom front-end build. Built using a modern front-end technology stack, on our own HTML framework and our own custom display components, giving us complete control of the upgrade path and minimising debugging over time.

  • Image generation - batch processing of all variations. There are thousands upon thousands of potential variants with so many product options. We use base 3D renders and then Photoshop batch processing, plus a lot of clever code to ensure the perfect rendering of every possible product variant.

  • Deployment to retail web domain and .exe desktop POS trade application. The two applications share much of the same functionality, with the web-based tool being, in essence, a stripped-down version of the trading tool. Shared components reduce costs for maintenance and upgrades and shorten the development lifecycle.

  • Reporting, ongoing support, hosting, permissions management and cyber security.

An enviable shelf life and incredible commercial success

Over its lifetime, the system has generated 9 figure sales revenues from a relatively modest six-figure budget. Support was and remains extremely light touch, with just the occasional update and minor fix. The system is very predictable in use and extremely robust.

The retail tool generates thousands of highly qualified leads each quarter, whilst the in-branch POS application trades in the millions. Robust MI & reporting is built into the system, allowing us to monitor its financial and technical performance. Interfacing directly with the manufacturing wing of the business, orders are sent directly to tooling and manufacturing with no human intervention. Meaning from the point of the completion of the sale, there's a zero-touch traceable process through to physical manufacturing.
